Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA)

Overview

Grow your savings to meet short- and long-term investment goals, tax-free. Available to Canadian residents 18+ with a valid social insurance number.

  • Income generated in the account is tax-free, even at withdrawal

  • Unused TFSA contribution room can be carried forward to later years

  • TFSA withdrawals in a calendar year are added to the contribution room for the following year

  • TFSA assets can be transferred to a spouse upon death

Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) – Fixed

Overview

RRSPs give you a tax break now by sheltering contributions and interest to provide an income in retirement. Earn a fixed rate of interest.

  • $500 minimum deposit 

  • Interest compounded annually

  • Term of 12 months to 60 months

  • Non-redeemable prior to maturity 

  • Highly competitive rates

Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) – Variable

Overview

RRSPs give you a tax break now by sheltering contributions and interest to provide an income in retirement. Your rate of interest will fluctuate with market conditions.

  • $100 minimum deposit 

  • No penalties for early withdrawal 

  • Interest rate varies with current rates

  • Individual or spousal 

  • Interest calculated on daily closing balance 

  • Free automatic deposits 

First Home Savings Account (FHSA)

Overview

The FHSA is a unique savings vehicle that helps you save towards a down payment on your first home. Your savings grow tax-free, and the amount withdrawn is not included in your income.

Key Features
  • Save up to $40,000 in an FHSA

  • Contribute up to $8,000 per year

  • If you don't buy a home, unused savings in your FHSA may be transferred to an RRSP

Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP)

Overview

The RESP is a government-approved plan that provides post-secondary education funding.

Key Features
  • Income earned within the plan is not taxed until withdrawn

  • Most post-secondary institutions and programs, including correspondence courses, qualify for payments

  • Additional funding is provided by the Canadian Education Savings Grant

Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF)

Overview

In the calendar year you turn 71, you must convert your RRSP into a RRIF. This tax-sheltered investment vehicle provides retirement income from funds accumulated in an RRSP.

Key Features
  • Payments may be received monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually

  • Transfer from another financial institution and we’ll cover the transfer fee up to $75 per plan

  • Your RRIF can be transferred to a surviving spouse on a tax-deferred basis

  • Fixed rate: Terms from 12 to 60 months; interest compounded annually

  • Variable rate: Interest calculated on daily closing balance; open term with withdrawal penalties
